What is Past Life Regression?

Past life regression simply means taking a person back in their mind to the time of a previous life in order for them to experience events almost as if they are there again. Although anyone can learn to do PLRs on their own, they are best done under the supervision of a qualified hypnotherapist with experience in the field. This is simply so that the past life explorer can be guided along their journey and can keep focus – something which is much easier to do when another person takes charge.

How Does the Process Work?

The process works on the lines of clinical hypnotherapy. Firstly we will have a conversation about what you might expect, how to get the most out of the experience, any misconceptions or worries you might have, and any thoughts you may have on a focus for our forthcoming journey. You may, for example, want to know if you have previously met your current partner in a past life. It’s totally OK not to have a particular focus though. There will be time to answer any questions you may have to make sure you are totally relaxed about the process.

Once you are completely happy to start, you will make yourself comfortable on a reclining chair or couch and asked to take some deep breaths. Then you will go through a progressive body relaxation where you will be directed to relax each muscle group in turn from your head to your toes. this is sometimes done using guided imagery or meditation.

Next we start to relax and empower the brain by giving it a number of visualization tasks to complete. Don’t worry if you feel that you aren’t a good visualizer – neither am I! We use all our senses in hypnosis and sometimes there is just a ‘knowing’ without visualization. At some point in the proceedings there will be a staircase that you will be asked to descend in your mind. This is called a deepener and is used to further relax and deepen the concentration.

At the bottom of the staircase you will enter your ‘safe place.’ This is a place filled only with light, love, positivity and happiness. It could be a favourite place in nature, a happy memory or a place you have always wanted to go. You will be directed to experience all the sights, sounds, smells and other senses that you are able to. This immersive experience allows the subconscious to come forward and your consciousness to take a back seat. Don’t worry though; you are always aware of what is going on and are always able to open your eyes at any time should you wish.

Finally we enter the ‘time corridor’ which consists of many, many doors, each one representing a previous life. You will be asked to travel down the corridor and stop in front of a door which feels significant to you. behind the door will be a happy memory from that life (we don’t want to jump in at the height of the battle of Waterloo!) and, when you are ready, you will be asked to open the door and step inside.

I'm In a Past Life, Now What?

And so you step inside and find yourself on the streets of 18th century Paris or 11th century Britain (for example.) the first thing we will do is spend some time acclimatizing – examining the surroundings using multiple senses and finding what we now may know (such as your name, age, gender, etc.) People normally jump into a past life where they are aged between around 6 and 20 and so I always like to take people back to their early childhood to meet their parents and establish what sort of home life they had.

From there we will move through that life looking at significant events such as marriages, deaths, important moments, literally anything can be classed as significant if it means something to you. Through this we will learn a lot about you in that life. We will explore the happy times, the sad times, the triumphs and the hardships to find what makes you ‘you.’

As you are guided towards the end of that life you will be asked if you want to see your own death. This is completely optional but is rarely traumatic and can give an effective closure to that life. From there you will move into the spirit world where you can contemplate the life you have just left and hear any messages and insights about what you need to take away with you. In my experience this is often a profound and emotional moment. We also take the opportunity to leave behind any negativity , oaths and vows made in that life.

we can now proceed to look in more detail at that ‘life between lives’ time – the space in spirit between one life and the next, or we can choose to exit now. The door is always behind you and so you can easily turn and go back into the corridor.

Wrapping It All Up

And so you re-enter your safe place, taking a little time to relax and decompress, enjoying the breeze on your face or bathing in a nearby waterfall, etc. At this point it is possible to ask to be joined by your spirit guide or higher self to gain some wisdom about what you have just experienced, after which you will head back up the stairs, becoming revitalized as you go until, with a big yawn and stretch, you open your eyes.

At this point, most of my clients have a big smile and say, ‘Wow,’ ‘Woo,’ or whatever their expletive of choice is.
